Lactulose is an osmotic laxative. It draws water into the colon, softening stools and promoting regular bowel movements. Vets may also include lactulose in hepatic care plans to help reduce ammonia—always under professional supervision.

How it works (simple science)

  • Lactulose reaches the colon largely undigested → gut bacteria ferment it into short-chain acids → water retention in stool + motility support.
